It's official, Canada. The news I think most of us have been anticipating arrived earlier this week, as Pier 1 Imports announced plans to close all their stores across the country. The homewares retailer has struggled with online competition for a while now, and they will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the States.
Pier 1 Imports still operates about a thousand stores across the continent, around 50 of which are based in Canada. We still haven't heard exactly when they'll shut their doors and how many jobs will be impacted, so I'd suggest visiting your local store and shopping their remaining inventory while you still can.
The Pier 1 Imports closest to my house has been shuttered for at least the past couple months, and we can't say we didn't see this coming. However, it's still a sad day for people like me who love browsing their aisles.
If you head to the Pier 1 Canada website, you'll see this short statement: "Pier 1 is pursuing a sale of the Company and has commenced Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. to facilitate a sale process. In connection with this, the company has made the decision to move forward in the U.S. and close all stores in Canada. We thank our customers in Canada for your continued loyalty and for shopping with us over the years."
