*Note: The Organic By Nature Sweet Peas have now been added to the recall."
I love butternut squash - but as I read this recall, I am glad I don't buy it pre-chopped and frozen. The Organic by Nature brand frozen Organic Butternut Squash Vegetable Medley and Sweet Peas have been recalled due to possible Listeria! Yuck—another one!? This one is again sold by Costco. What is going on?
The recall warning was issued on April 23rd, but became official as of May 4th. On May 5th, the Organic Sweet Peas were added to the list of these recalled fruits. The recall originally had a berry blend, but has been updated to included these Organic by Nature blends as well. It is possible that this food is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Scary stuff!
It is also important to keep in mind that food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell bad, but you shouldn't risk consuming it either way. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as well as the old and the young. Symptoms will include nausea, fever, muscle aches, headaches, and severe symptoms in pregnant women can include premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even worse - stillbirth.
This product has been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan at all Costco locations. I will update this post if we come to find more provinces included.
This is a Class 1 hazard notification, so definitely don't risk consuming the product if you own any of this.
