Pokemon Go is a serious craze all of a sudden. On my morning dog walks, I see kids gathering at the City Hall to collect their Pokemon freebies via the new Pokemon Go app. All over the world this game is taking over - but it is raising some safety concerns for us parents.
We really need to make sure that we our keeping our kiddos safe while they enjoy this new Pokemon Go toy. It is a great way to get the kids out and walking that is for sure - but there are many precautions to take.
Stay Within Your Safety Zone
If you wouldn't normally go into that dark alley when not playing Pokemon Go, then don't go down that dark alley just to catch Pikachu. Predators have already used this game to lure children and/or rob people of their phone or belongings. For our kids - if they want to adventure out and play Pokemon Go, it is best to do it in a pair or groups. You can even go with your kids when they are hunting for Pokemon.
Know When & Where The Kids Are Playing
I would make this a very hard and fast rule in my home. If you are venturing out to play Pokemon Go, tell me where you plan on playing and what time you will be home. It is very important to let someone know where you are exploring so they can be sure you're safe.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
I had two teenagers bump into me this morning while they were playing Pokemon Go. What is stopping them from bumping into an oncoming car? It is very important to be aware of your surroundings and while it isn't a bad thing to enjoy the game and get out walking - be sure you are also paying attention to where you are going and what is around you.
Prepare For Your Journeys
No, I don't mean pokeballs. I mean - if you are going for a long walk to catch Pokemon in this heat then be sure to bring water, snacks. Also remember - that where you walk too... you also have to walk back. Pokemon is a great way to get some exercise while having fun - but don't over exhaust yourself!
Do Not Pokemon While Driving
While it may seem so obvious, it obviously isn't. There are people allover playing Pokemon Go while driving. I have noticed a lot more stationed cop cars over the past few days - I assume they are going to strap down on people who are trying to catch Pokemon while driving to and from work.
What other ways can we keep the kids safe while they play the new top-downloaded game?
