All Natural DIY Mascara!!

All Natural DIY Mascara!!

1

Hey Moosers, check this out! I have sensitive eyes and I have been hunting for an "all-natural" mascara for ages, but I just discovered that I can make it myself - and so can you! This All Natural Do It Yourself Mascara won't cost you much, and you can get the ingredients from Shoppers Drug Mart or other cosmetics/pharmacy stores.

Homemade mascara is a great addition to any makeup routine. It is all natural, and eye friendly. It is also easy to wash off and won't leave your eyes and eyelids feeling irritated afterwards. Regular mascara carries ingredients like oils, waxes, pigments and other "toxic" stuff. So if you want to go "au naturel" then ditch those products with the other "toxic" stuff and try out this recipe.

Here's what you are going to need:

Tools

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 4 tsp aloe vera gel
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp bees wax
  • 1 - 2 capsules of activated charcoal (for black) or cocoa powder (for brown)

If you want more of a "waterproof" mascara then increase to 3/4 or even 1 tsp of bees wax.

Directions:

First, put your coconut oil, aloe vera gel, and grated bees wax into a small saucepan. Heat it over low heat and stir it until the beeswax is entirely melted.

Then, open one or two capsules of the activated charcoal (or cocoa powder) - this works out to be between 1/4 and 1/2 tsp. Pout that into your oil mixture and stir it until they are a smooth consistency. Remove them from the heat.

Voila! Pour your mixture into a syringe and then squeeze it into your empty mascara tubes. You're all set! Enjoy :)

A big thank-you to ThankYourBody.com for the instructions and ingredients.

Hi Alice. You would need oils, waxes and pigments in your mascara of course. What I am trying to say is that other mascaras can have toxic ingredients, while this one does not.

What toxic ingredients specifically are found in mascara? I feel like perhaps you mean ingredients that for some people can potentially irritate very sensitive skin and eyes, but I personally have a pet peeve with throwing the word "toxic" around. The FDA has some pretty stringent guidelines for cosmetics, so it's very unlikely that your average mascara has anything that will harm you.

Can you buy mascara tubes anywhere? I love this idea but I'm not sure about reusing the tubes.

Not sure, maybe try cleaning out an old one? Also i got these over the holidays, and are GREAT!! http://www.sephora.com/disposable-mascara-wands-P387885?country_switch=ca Fun way to try different types of mascara brushes!

Wow! Thanks! Great suggestion - I had not heard of those before. The disposable mascara wands would make it so you could essentially use any tube. Cool!

Amazon.ca seems to have a variety of them. This one is $2.92 - but you may be able to find tubes at the dollar store or something and just use a mascara brush. http://www.amazon.ca/MSmask-Reusable-Portable-Eyelashes-Container/dp/B013BFU910/&tag=bargainmoose-20
