Origin.com is offering Ultima 8 Gold Edition free for download.
Like most of Origin.com's free games, this is an oldie. Originally released in 1994, this game has retro graphics and text that will remind you of how far we have come since. I tend to think of these games as great trips down memory lane. Many of us grew up on these games, so it is nostalgic to play them again. I would never spend money on these games (except one... there is one I would purchase), but for free it is certainly worth downloading.
Here is a summary of the story line:
The Guardian has tricked you, Avatar. After you defeated Batlin on Serpent's Isle, he banished you to Pagan, a world under his control. Once, it was a beautiful land, but ever since the ancient battle between the Elemental Titans and the evil "Destroyer", it is engulfed in eternal twilight.
Your job is to become a Titan yourself in order to find your way back home. I have to say, the story line seems rather cool. Gog.com sells the same game for $5.99. There are also plenty of reviews on GOG, including:
this would have been an excellent game if it were given a different name. As an action RPG, it works quite well, and is groundbreaking in the genre. As a follow-up to the role playing classic Ultima VII, however, it is extremely disappointing. It is not without merit, however.
I am more of classic RPG gamer, but an action RPG sounds like a lot of fun too. When looking at the graphics, I was somewhat reminded of Heroes of Might & Magic. Pentagrams, knights, skeletons, and plenty of monsters complete this little game. This is not a game I have ever played (I was only eight when it was released), but I hope it brings back memories for other Moosers.
You will need an Origin account in order to download this game. You do receive the complete game - this is not just free to play.
