Google Play Store has an entire collection of Billie Holiday songs on promotion for just $1.99. Each song would regularly cost $1.29, so this is one heck of a deal.
At this price, you will pay just over 2¢ per song. Even if you just like a couple Billie Holiday songs, at this price it is worth purchasing the entire collection. Just for a little fun with math, if you purchased all 88 songs at their retail price of $1.29, then you would be spending $113.52. That is a lot of money!
Now, I know a bit of Billie Holiday but I am no means an expert. She was an American Jazz singer with quite the voice. While the recording is a bit dated, I find the music pleasant to listen to when in the mood. I generally like a little sprinkle of jazz in the evenings or around dinnertime as background music. It is sultry, relaxing, and elegant all at the same time.
Enjoy such songs as:
- Easy Living
- God Bless The Child
- Solitude
- I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues
- Strange Fruit
I think I only have heard one or two of her songs before. However, I listened to the preview of about 10 of these songs before I started this blog post. Her music is quite enjoyable and I hope many of our Moosers like this little deal.
Strange Fruit has a bit of a story behind it. This song deals with racial hatred at a time when speaking about it, especially if you were African American, was taboo and could get you beaten or killed. As one NY Times article says:
"Strange Fruit" became a nightly ritual for Holiday, then one of her most successful records, then one of her signature songs, at least in those places where it was safe to perform. For throughout Holiday's short life—she died in 1939 at the age of forty-four—the song existed in a kind of artistic quarantine: it could travel, but only to selected places.
It is a song that continues to be revered as it was bold for that time period and is still relevant today when racial prejudices and hatred still continue. This song is unique in her discography, and it requires a couple listens to understand.
