If the summer heat is crowding your brain function and melting all your marbles, then pick up a new air conditioner for summer. Best Buy Canada has discounted this Danby 5000 BTU Window Air Conditioner (DAC050MB1GB) from $129.99 down to $99.99 with free shipping.
Now, this unit (with the exact model number) is not available anywhere else in Canada. however, I did find a Danby 5,000 BTW air conditioner with just a slightly different model number (looks the same) for $144 at Walmart.
After searching for a bit, I figured that I would just compare this air conditioner's price to other 5,000 BTU units. The cheapest 5,000 BTU unit on Walmart is Mainstays for $109.98. Home Depot Canada has a LG air conditioner (5,000 BTU) for $119. Canadian Tire has a Gree 5,000 BTU unit for $109.99 and Rona sells a Facto unit for $119. Anywhere I looked, I could not find a 5,000 BTU unit for under $100.
This air conditioner will cover approximately 150 sq. ft, so it is great for bedrooms, home offices, playrooms, and very small apartments. I know my bedroom is roasting in the summer as the balcony door (off the bedroom) receives the full evening sun. While it is nice to lie in the sunlight spring and fall, summer becomes an experiment of sleeping in an oven.
The Denby air conditioner comes with two cooling speeds and uses environmentally-friendly R410A refrigerant. Though air conditioners are known for their high energy consumption, this unit has a 9.7 EER Energy rating. Honestly, I think it is worth the energy expenditure and cost because my personal energy plummets if I am overheating.
This air conditioner is covered by a one-year warranty. I have actually been looking for one of these units since last summer when I nearly stopped getting out of bed due to the heat. I was considering buying used but air conditioners are not known for their long life span. I think it would be safer just to buy new - especially now that I can buy one for under $100 pre-tax. If you are in a rush, then reserve online and pick-up at your local store within a few hours.
